Walbrook Ward

Walbrook Ward
One of the twenty-six wards of the City lying between Cheap, Broad Street, and Cornhill Wards north, Langbourne and Candlewick Wards east, Dowgate Ward south, and Cordwainer and Vintry Wards west.
Earliest mention: "Warda do Walebrok," 3 Ed. I. (Rot. Hund. I. p.429).
The ward known as the "Ward of John Adrien," 1277, has been identified as "Walbrook Ward" (Cal. L. Bk. B. p.266).
In Stow's time it contained four parish churches: " St. Stephen Walbrook," " St. John upon Walbrook," "St. Swithin, London Stone," and "St. Mary Bothaw."
Now two only: "St. Stephen Walbrook," "St. Swithin, London Stone."
It also contains within its limits the Mansion House and Salters' Hall.
The appearance of the southern portion of the ward has been materially altered in modern times by the widening of Cannon Street and the erection of Cannon Street Station.
Stow says it taketh name of the street called " Walbrook" (227), and many of the wards are so named of the main street intersecting them. But it is possible that in this case the ward was named after the brook and not after the street.
   See Wards.
